Booker campaign statement: Charles Booker, descendant of slaves in Kentucky, becomes the first Black Kentuckian to win a major party nomination for U.S. Senate
LOUISVILLE, KY – In a historic victory, Charles Booker has won the Kentucky Democratic Primary election for U.S. Senate. Booker is the first Black Kentuckian to receive the Democratic nomination.
With more than 48% of the vote counted, Booker has received 72% of Democratic votes.
“I am beyond grateful and humbled by the overwhelming support we have received from my fellow Kentuckians tonight,” said Booker. “I started this campaign to fight for a bold vision that will improve the quality of life of all Kentuckians, guarantee true freedom and ensure widespread prosperity across the Commonwealth. Tonight, we are that much closer to making this vision a reality. Tonight, we roll up our sleeves to continue the work to win in November and beyond.”
Democratic nominee Charles Booker will face Republican Rand Paul in the general election, which will take place on November 8, 2022.
“For far too long, our communities have been abandoned and ignored by leaders who are only looking out for themselves,” said Booker. “The people of Kentucky deserve solutions and they deserve leadership. They deserve a future where they don’t have to struggle for the most basic rights and needs in life. I will change that and together we will transform our future, win a Kentucky New Deal, inspire new leadership in Kentucky and make sure everyone in our Commonwealth has the opportunity for a better life.”

First, let me say I’m so grateful for the thousands of grassroots supporters who have joined our team by chipping in, making phone calls, knocking on doors, or spreading the word to make this a people-powered campaign....
But I need to be honest...Political forecasters are saying this is going to be a terrible cycle for Democrats, and we need to be firing on all cylinders from now until November 8th if we want to keep Kentucky’s only Democratic district blue.
Kentucky is home. My family has been here for generations, it’s where I’m raising mine, and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do to make sure everyone feels like this is a place where their family can live and grow, too.
But the honest truth is that when our friends and neighbors begged for help, what did right-wing Kentucky politicians like Mitch McConnell in Washington do? They gave favors to giant special interests while turning their backs on hard-working families.
Kentucky families are struggling to afford a trip to the doctor, are forced to send their children to overcrowded classrooms, and even need to work two jobs just to make ends meet.
They deserve better. I’m running to make sure every single Kentuckian has affordable health care, strong education, and freedom from discrimination -- because Kentucky is our home, and everyone has the right to a compassionate government that works for them.
