Democrats are eager to find a candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2020, but no top tier challenger has jumped in yet.

Matt Jones, a well-known Kentucky sports radio personality, says he’s interested. But he’s waiting on Amy McGrath, a Democratic star who lost a Kentucky congressional race in 2018 and is being courted to run for the Senate.

The Kentucky State AFL-CIO has endorsed Democrat Darrell Pugh in the March 5 state Senate special election to succeed Ray Jones.

“I’m honored and pleased,” said Pugh, who owns Castle's Jewelry and Gifts in Pikeville, the Pike County seat. “It means a lot of great supporters are behind me.”

Also a Pikeville Democrat, Jones stepped down to run for county judge-executive. He was elected last November.

The clock is ticking: Unless Congress and President Donald Trump act, there are three days until the government shuts down for the second time in less than a month. Working people are ready to rise up again and tell Congress and the White House that we won’t stand for another shutdown.

Attorney Gen. Andy Beshear promised a group of western Kentucky union members today that when he's the state's chief executive "you will be welcome back into your government and not have the doors closed on you and not have to stand outside."

The Democratic gubernatorial hopeful huddled with about 20 union officers and rank-and-file members today at the Western Kentucky AFL-CIO Area Council hall in Paducah.

Also, Marissa McNee of the Kentucky Democratic Party issued the following statement in a fund-raising email today: "Since November, Republicans have been trying to steal Rep. Glenn’s seat from him, a seat he won by one vote. This morning, those attempts finally ended when DJ Johnson accepted defeat. The takeaway is simple: when we fight back, we win. This won’t be the last bit of shenanigans from the GOP and helping Rep.
