No time for slacking off now
From BILL LONDRIGAN, Kentucky State AFL-CIO president
All: We're down to the wire. No time left to wonder if we can do any more to get our members and their families to the polls tomorrow. We need to let them know that the polls are only open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and they MUST HAVE A PLAN TO GET TO THE POLLS BEFORE, AFTER OR DURING WORK HOURS.
To make sure that employees have time to vote on Election Day Section 148 of the Kentucky Constitution provides that: "The General Assembly shall provide by law that all employers shall allow employees, under reasonable regulations, at least four hours on election days, in which to cast their votes."
KRS 118 specifies that "...employers may specify the hours during which an employee may absent themselves" and employees should notify their employer prior to Election Day (today) of their intent to absent themselves to vote.
We are urging every union to contact their members today at their worksites or by phone so they know they must vote tomorrow between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. If you have agents or members that can assist please assign them to canvass, make phone call or leaflet your worksites. If you need leaflets with the slate of endorsed candidates in Louisville you can pick them up at IBEW Local 369 or you can contact your zone lead or Liles Taylor or Dan Justice.
Let's not slack off now! We need to remind every member how important it is to vote tomorrow and for their families to do the same!
