We are excited to announce this year’s Labor Day theme: It’s Better in a Union.

  • Life is better in a union; standing together with co-workers in a union makes a tangible difference in working people’s lives every day. It means building a better future for ourselves and our families, generations down the line.
  • Fighting those in power is better in a union; after decades of anti-worker propaganda, misinformation and corporate attacks, working people are on the rise!
  • And our democracy is better in a union; at a time when extremist politicians seem intent on dragging us backward, unions represent the best united front we have to protect and strengthen the progress we’ve made on civil rights, voting rights and racial justice.

We are ready to make this message the focus of our Labor Day campaign this year, but we will need your help. Please see the Labor Day 2023 Toolkit for resources, including graphics, sample email, social language, talking points and more. We’ll be adding to this in the coming days, so check back often.

What you can expect:

  • Videos of members, explainer videos and more multimedia will be added.
  • The AFL-CIO will host a “how to form a union” webinar event for nonmembers trying to organize their workplace. More information to come.
  • There will be events across the country both members and nonmembers alike can join.

What you can do right now:

Labor in the Pulpit Program

As part of our Labor Day activities, the Labor in the Pulpit program is placing union speakers from the federated bodies into faith congregations during the Labor Day weekend to make five-minute presentations about the values faith and labor share and lifts up the concerns of labor. The AFL-CIO is hosting a speaker training for those who are interested on Tuesday, August 22 at 7 p.m. ET via Zoom. To register, complete this form. If you have questions, please contact Michael Szpak, AFL-CIO religion-labor coordinator at mszpak@aflcio.org.

This Labor Day, let’s spread the word that it really is better in a union, but let’s not stop there. Labor Day is just the beginning of this campaign. Together, let’s keep the drumbeat going long beyond this holiday and, with a unified voice, keep reminding everyone why it’s better in a union. Look for more communication from us soon, and we can’t wait to see you on Labor Day!
