Another senseless act of gun violence has shaken our country, this time right here in our Louisville community.

Yesterday, the lives of at least five innocent people were taken from us and eight others were injured — including two police officers — at a downtown Louisville bank.

To the families and loved ones that have been impacted by this shooting, please know that we are standing with you in this moment of darkness.

I’m incredibly thankful for the quick response of Louisville’s first responders — their bravery in the face of violence undoubtedly prevented the loss of more lives and represented the best of our community.

While we’re still learning the details, this is an all too familiar scenario. This act of violence was the 146th mass shooting this year and comes just two weeks after the horrific Nashville School Shooting.

We cannot normalize the epidemic of gun violence that impacts our communities. Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We must work to pass common-sense legislation that will keep our families safe from gun violence.

In the days ahead, we must come together as one community. My office will be working with the authorities to provide all the assistance we can. If you or your loved ones are struggling today and in the weeks to come, there are immediate resources available:

You can also help out by signing up to donate blood at a Red Cross donation site in Louisville or closest to you.

Louisville is strong, and we will move through this tragedy together.
