McConnell refuses to pass stimulus until next year, putting lives in danger

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sen. Mitch McConnell plans to stall passage of another critical stimulus package until 2021, the 36-year incumbent told radio host Hugh Hewitt Friday.

Over a million Kentuckians have applied for unemployment benefits, more than 40% of Kentucky renters are at risk of eviction, and nearly 1,500 Kentuckians have lost their lives due to the coronavirus. Yet McConnell has intentionally prevented action to address the urgent health and economic crisis until next year.

“We can’t wait until 2021 for relief. Beating this virus simply has to be more important than partisan fights. Our lives are at stake,” said retired Marine Lt. Col. Amy McGrath, the Democratic nominee for Senate challenging the highly unpopular senator. “It becomes more clear every day: we simply can’t afford another six-years--or even six months--with McConnell’s obstruction at the helm of the Senate.”

With each passing month since McConnell let the unemployment benefits and eviction moratorium expire in July, the trajectory of the virus and economy remain dire. Statistics show as many as 16 million people in our country could be out of work at the beginning of next year without additional aid. By the end of February, there will likely be more than 40 million more cases of COVID-19 and as many 500,000 people may die from the virus if management of the pandemic does not improve with additional funds for testing and tracing, hospitals, and schools.

“After serving our country for 20 years in the Marines, I got into this race because I wanted to serve the state and country I love. That task is clearly as urgent as ever, given Sen. McConnell’s obstructionism during this crisis. If everyone votes, we can get McConnell out of office and finally provide Kentuckians with the relief we need to get through this crisis. Kentucky can change the trajectory of our country on Tuesday,” said McGrath.
