Editor,

You recently published a column, or guest editorial, or free campaign advertisement, from Senator Mitch McConnell in which he attempted, unsuccessfully in my view, to explain that his part in the Senate Impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump was justified due to the unjust partisan treatment of Trump by those nasty Democrats.  I also recently received a letter from his office addressing my concerns that he in fact, did not act impartially in that trial as he and the other senators had sworn to do.

In his office’s letter to me (I don’t think he actually wrote it) reference is made to a common Republican defense:  the House impeachment sought to overrule the will of the voters in 2016.  The truth is that Trump did not win the popular vote in 2016.  The Electoral College voted for Trump.  Also, didn’t Russian interference affect the “will of the voters?”  It is also stated that “any such process must be conducted with the utmost fairness and transparency”; claiming the Democrats did not do so by excluding the President and his ardent supporters from the process.  Again, this is not the truth.  The President forbade any involvement with House investigators.

The letter refers to the “partisan motivations of Speaker Pelosi.”  What a bold lie from the Partisan Chief, Mitch McConnell.  The Senator claims to be fair and honest in his deliberations and yet publicly confessed he would not be a fair juror in the Senate trial.

Despite Senator McConnell’s boasting about how much government money he has brought to Kentucky, he has not raised the standard of living, the health of the environment, or leveled the playing field between rich and poor in Kentucky.  How can we trust what this man says?  How can we let him remain in office?  He doesn’t support fairness and transparency, but lying and obfuscation.  He supports a President known as the Liar-in-Chief for his increasing record of bold-faced lies in public.

Someone else can bring federal money to Kentucky.  I prefer a senator who actually cares about me, my family, and friends, and wants to increase the quality of life for all Kentuckians.

Respectfully,

Reverend James H. Gearhart
