WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after the Republican Study Committee (RSC), which represents nearly 80 percent of House Republicans, announced their 2025 budget proposal:

“The House GOP has now gone further than ever with their attacks on Social Security and Medicare. The Republican Study Committee's extreme budget explicitly calls for cutting Social Security benefits for millions of Americans, ending Medicare as we know it, and making trillions in devastating cuts that would raise the cost of living for working families.”

“Instead of saving Social Security and Medicare by making billionaires pay their fair share, House Republicans would rather break the sacred promise that every American should be able to retire with dignity. This Republican budget is an attack on seniors, veterans, and the middle class. President Biden and Congressional Democrats will fight to ensure it never becomes reality.”

Background:

  • The 2024 Republican Study Committee Budget included similar proposals to raise the retirement age. Analysis from House Budget Committee Democrats shows that the 2024 proposal would have resulted in benefit cuts for hundreds of millions of Americans, forcing them to work longer for less.
  • While Republicans continue to attack Social Security and Medicare, Ranking Member Brendan F. Boyle and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Sheldon Whitehouse have introduced the Medicare and Social Security Fair Share Act.This legislation would extend the solvency of Social Security and Medicare indefinitely by making the nation's highest earners contribute their fair share, as verified by the Chief Actuaries of the Social Security Administration and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
