For more than 40 years, there has been a coordinated effort from right-wing interests to defame and defund unions. The result has been stagnant wages, unsafe workplaces, and rising inequality.

The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act of 2019 (S.1306) would strengthen workers’ right to organize, join a union, and bargain collectively for higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. The PRO Act will provide millions of working people across the country with protections that will:

  • Explicitly prohibit employers from interfering with employee unionization voting procedures;
  • Provide stronger and swifter remedies when employers interfere with workers’ rights;
  • Close loopholes in federal employment and labor laws;
  • Protect strikes and other protest activity; and
  • Expand organizing and bargaining rights to include independent contractors.

Labor unions and collective bargaining rights are critical to obtaining higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions for everyone. Union members earn ~13 percent more than those with similar education, occupation, and experience in a nonunion workplace, and are able to negotiate for improved workplace conditions.

Across the country, workers are mobilizing, organizing, protesting, and striking, and they are winning pay raises and other real change — like pay equity — by using their collective voices. But it is still too difficult for working people to form a union at their workplace.

Our economy should work for everyone, not just corporate CEOs and billionaires. It's time for Congress to bolster workers’ rights by passing the PRO Act today.
