From Forward Kentucky: Why are teachers going to Frankfort?

Schools are closing. Teachers are calling in “sick.” They are putting on their red shirts and driving to Frankfort to fill the halls and the committee rooms of the state capitol.

If you are wondering why all of this is happening, the reason is simple. It’s a combination of two things: the issues, and the shenanigans.

The issues

Remake of TRS board – This was what caused one of the sickouts. House Bill 525 would remove a number of teacher slots from the board of the Teachers Retirement System, and give them to other groups in the state. The fear is that this is a takeover move by the governor and others who want to undo the current pension system.
