Op-Ed: Legislative Session Was About Shift and Shaft

The 2018 Kentucky General Assembly featured larger throngs of protestors than any session in recent memory. Thousands of Kentuckians trekked to Frankfort to stand up to an agenda they saw as serving powerful special interests rather than the workers and families of the state.

Final Budget and Tax Changes Spend More, Generate Less
The Kentucky General Assembly returned to Frankfort last weekend to finish its business for the 2018 regular session. On Friday, both houses voted to override the governor’s vetoes of their executive branch budget (HB 200) and revenue bill (HB 366). On Saturday, they passed three new pieces of legislation amending the budget and tax plans that will have an overall negative impact on the finances of the commonwealth.

What Are Taxes For?
Across the commonwealth, Kentuckians filed their taxes this week; and many are wondering if and how the federal tax changes passed in late 2017 and the state changes passed by the 2018 General Assembly will impact what they pay. Despite major setbacks in both these new laws, Tax Day is a good time to remember the important investments our contributions pay for, and why we should all be chipping in for a stronger commonwealth.
