Frankfort, KY — After sitting on his hands and doing nothing for months as the COVID-19 pandemic has raged across the country, Mitch McConnell is now supporting executive actions that would defund Social Security and Medicare rather than sit down with Congressional leaders and pass further pandemic relief.
McConnell also endorsed a huge pay cut in unemployment benefits that raids disaster relief funds during a pandemic.
McConnell’s reliance on the executive branch comes after he spent the last three weekends at home, attending a ritzy wedding and generally being unavailable for negotiations over further relief.
And it is in direct contrast with how McConnell felt about executive orders in lieu of Congressional action in both 2014 and 2016.
Meanwhile, more than 150,000 Kentuckians are currently unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Kentucky’s business community is warning about massive tax increases while begging McConnell for a forgivable unemployment insurance loan.
In a statement, Kentucky Democratic Party spokesperson Marisa McNee said that Mitch has finally shown his true colors in endorsing defunding Social Security and Medicare.
“Mitch McConnell has returned to his old playbook of trying to cut Social Security and Medicare. Rather than lead during this pandemic, Mitch has been taking long weekends rather than doing his job,” McNee said. “Kentucky deserves a real leader like Amy McGrath who will fight for them every day -- not just when it’s convenient.”
