It's on the books and available for viewing. Our June 15 Workers' Rights Town Hall brought together Kentucky workers, policy makers, and advocates, including:

  • Rep. McKenzie Cantrell (District 38)
  • Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3)
  • Bill Londrigan (KY AFL-CIO President)
  • TyJuan Johnson (union worker)
  • Erick Meadows (union worker)
  • Jessica Farris (union Worker)
  • Sarah Brafman (A Better Balance)

Panel members talked about what federal legislation on physical and human infrastructure could mean for Kentucky workers and their families.

Now, you can watch the recording and share it with friends.

We greatly appreciate each of our speakers and everyone who joined in the Town Hall!

Sincerely,
Rich Seckel
Director

Housing news: CDC Eviction Moratorium Extended through July 31
The federal government will send almost half a billion dollars to Kentucky this year to pay rent to landlords. Apply for rental assistance.

KEJC is working hard with our allies to encourage courts to modify eviction processes to match.

Last week, the U.S. DOJ sent a letter to state court officials to encourage eviction diversion programs. KEJC has been promoting diversion since May of last year.

Meanwhile, the CDC has extended its (very imperfect) eviction protections one last time. Now, they will expire July 31st.

People facing eviction for nonpayment of rent can use our app to send the required Declaration to their landlords.

The best advice is always to encourage people to connect with the legal aid program serving their community. Legal aid can connect people with rental assistance and make the CDC’s protections a reality.

A Victory for Equitable Healthcare
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has passed its third big legal test. It's still the law of the land.

On June 17, the U.S. Supreme Court turned back a claim that the "minimum essential coverage" provision of the ACA was unconstitutional.

See the decision here.

The court found that state plaintiffs in California vs. Texas lacked standing to bring the challenge. The reason? They hadn't shown a past or future injury fairly traceable to enforcement of the provision.

A win for the ACA is a win for Kentucky! Our partners at Kentucky Voices for Health report that over 490,000 adults and 52,000 kids in Kentucky have gained health coverage thanks to the ACA. That's big!

A Chance to Reduce Child Poverty by 49%
Starting July 15, families of nearly 1 million Kentucky kids will get $250 to $300 per child every month from July to December through changes to the Child Tax Credit.

Families won't have to wait to file their taxes to get the credit.

Payments will NOT count against families' food, medical, or housing assistance. The tax credit could reduce child poverty by more than 40%. It's a big deal with the potential to be transformational.

KEJC Radio: Health Coverage
Let's get Kentucky covered! The newest episode of Kentucky Equal Justice Radio features Kentucky Voices for Health Outreach Coordinator Priscilla Easterling. She and KEJC Outreach Coordinator Miranda Brown discuss the many health coverage options available to Kentuckians, including Kentuckians without secure status.

Priscilla and Miranda also remind listeners to take advantage of the Special Enrollment Period, which ends on August 15th.
