Kiesha Curry figured 200 Harris-Walz yard signs would be plenty for Paducah.

“All 200 are gone,” said Curry, who chairs the McCracken County Democratic Executive Committee. “I’m so excited. This is amazing.”

Curry and a group of committee members handed out the signs outside the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 184 hall on sweltering Saturday morning in Paducah, the county seat. A steady stream of sign seekers showed up in cars whose drivers happily departed with signs. They included Sally Wiggins and her children, Harvey and Ruby.

Curry said the fact that all of the signs were taken mirrored the “hope and energy” she saw during TV broadcasts of the Democratic National Convention. “It’s nationwide. Everybody is excited.”

The committee bought the union-made signs from the Louisville Democratic Party but offered them free for the taking. Most people left donations.

Committee Treasurer Judy Vance volunteered to drive to the Derby City on Friday to pick up the signs, which are blue with “KENTUCKIANS FOR HARRIS WALZ” in white letters.

Local Democrats hope the sign giveaway is a good omen for a party rebound in the fall election. Donald Trump carried McCracken County with 66.4 percent of the vote in 2016 and 65 percent in 2020.
