From the New York Times: McConnell Says Republicans Would Fill a Supreme Court Vacancy in 2020, Drawing Claims of Hypocrisy
EDITOR'S NOTE: Want more proof--as if more proof were needed--that "principled politician" is an oxymoron when it comes to Mitch McConnell? You'd be hard pressed to find any Kentucky politician, present or past, who can top the Bluegrass State's senior senator in pure cynicism, unalloyed hypocrisy--and rank demagoguery to boot.
STATEMENT FROM BEN SELF, KENTUCKY DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIR: “Senator McConnell denied Judge Garland a hearing in 2016 and cited election-year ‘tradition’ going back to 1880 in keeping the seat open until a new president could be inaugurated. Sadly, it’s no surprise that with a Republican President, Senator Mitch McConnell has changed his mind. McConnell holds no beliefs sacred — they change as it becomes politically convenient. He’s the worst kind of politician: a self-serving hypocrite.”
Democrats accused Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, of hypocrisy on Tuesday after he said Republicans would confirm a justice to the Supreme Court if a seat opened up amid the election campaign in 2020, even after denying President Barack Obama a similar opportunity in 2016.
The senator made the remarks at a Chamber of Commerce event in Paducah, Ky., after an audience member asked what Senate Republicans would do if a Supreme Court justice died next year.
“Oh, we’d fill it,” he responded with a grin, prompting laughter from the audience.
