The Transport Workers Union and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority are in the middle of negotiation a new contract. TWU says its members are ready to strike if a reasonable deal isn’t reached and that could impact riders who use the trains to get to New York City.

A union representing Metro-North Railroad employees has handed out flyers to commuters and placed ads in local newspapers warning of a potential strike as soon as September, the newspaper The Hour reports. Members of two locals of Transportation Workers Union, which represents approximately 600 inspectors, mechanics, and coach cleaners, voted last month to authorize a strike following the conclusion of current negotiations involving the National Mediations Board. Since then, union members have handed out flyers at Grand Central Terminal and in New Haven, and taken out ads in three newspapers saying the railroad is “on the express track” toward a strike.

After more than a year of negotiations, leaders of Metro Transit’s main employee union, Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 788, and agency management have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract. Local 788 President Reggie Howard said union members were set to vote on the contract Monday, Aug. 7, after Labor Tribune press time.

“We expressed serious concerns to zoo management about the effectiveness of existing safety and training protocols and about staff turnover rates,” Ellie Caruso, president of the zoo union, AFSCME Local 752, said in a statement about the new contract. ″It’s essential for the future of the Philadelphia Zoo and the animals we love and care for that we have all the tools we need to provide the highest quality care, and that includes competitive pay.”

Representatives of Bath Iron Works’ largest union on Monday announced a tentative contract agreement in the first negotiations since the union went on strike in 2020. Machinists Union Local S6 represents about 4,250 of the shipyard’s 6,500 workers. The three-year agreement, which union members will vote on by Aug. 20, includes pay raises, an increase in BIW’s contributions to pension plans and higher health insurance premiums. A $1,200 ratification bonus for workers in the previous contract was not included in the agreement.
