Labor Groups Target Hyundai, and Biden, Over Transition to Electric

A coalition of labor unions and civic groups in Georgia and Alabama will launch a pressure campaign on Monday targeting Hyundai’s electric vehicle plants and its clean energy suppliers, an effort that could also push the Biden administration to make good on its oft-repeated pledge to create not just jobs but “good union jobs.”

VFX Workers at Disney File for Unionization Under IATSE

Visual effects workers at Walt Disney Pictures have filed for an election with the National Labor Relations Board that could allow them to unionize with IATSE. The news comes as Disney-owned Marvel VFX workers are currently organizing for their own union election amid the writers and actors strikes.


 

Union representing Kentucky Utilities workers authorizes strike

Kentucky Utilities workers voted to authorize a strike, announced by the union representing the workers on Monday. IBEW Local 2100 represents around 60 Kentucky Utilities workers including linemen, meter readers and clerks. "This strike authorization vote sends a clear message to Kentucky Utilities that it needs to treat its employees with dignity and respect and start bargaining in good faith," Local 2100 business manager Alex Vibbet said in a statement. 


 

Local nurses ratify contract with Providence

On Thursday, some local nurses at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka and Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna approved a three-year contract with Providence after three months of negotiations. In a release, the California Nurses Association and National Nurses United – which represents over 560 nurses at Providence facilities in Humboldt County – lauded the new contract, noting that it includes staffing improvements such as designated break nurses and a gradually introduced 18% wage increase. One particular win for the union was increased break nurse coverage – nurses who take care of patients so another nurse can get a break – according to James Ladika, chief nurse representative for the local CNA chapter.


 

Resident assistants at Tufts University plan to go on strike on move-in day Tuesday

The union that represents resident assistants at Tufts University is planning to go on strike on move-in day on Tuesday, August 29. OPEIU Local 153 voted in favor on Friday to authorize a strike after management refused to meet their demand of providing an economic counterproposal.

This Labor Day, we take time to remember the sacrifices made over many decades by the thousands of working men and women across Illinois. We thank our policymakers in Springfield and Chicago for consistently stepping up to support working families. We must acknowledge that our gains have come with continued challenges.

Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562 members Brian Beck, Tom Madden, Senator Doug Beck, Dan Beck  and Missouri AFL-CIO President Jake Hummel spent the day volunteering at the St. Louis chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women’s (NCJW) Back to School Store on Aug. 6. The one-day event provides local children in need with the essentials to be successful at school and excited to learn. Since the annual event began in 2000, NCJW’s St. Louis chapter has served more than 25,000 children in the community.
