From #OurJCPS: Keep the momentum going
The last few weeks have been busy! We’ve asked a lot from you as we stand up for our students and fight the proposed state takeover of Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). You’ve sacrificed time and energy that could have been spent with your family and friends, and we know how difficult that decision can be. But here’s the thing – it’s working.
Now we need to double down. It’s going to be critical that we keep working together this summer to build on the momentum that we’ve achieved.
The first thing we need your help with is our upcoming community canvass. We need you and your friends to have conversations with your neighbors. Tell them why a state takeover is not the right solution for our children. Register for a community canvas here; having these conversations with our neighbors is critical to growing our movement and stopping the proposed takeover. Everyone who signs up for a canvasing shift will receive materials to provide their neighbors, and will receive training on how to talk about the proposed takeover.
In the past few weeks, our Coalition has gained traction, our voices are being heard, and our community is paying attention. Here ’s some of the recent news coverage that we’ve seen:
Headline: “JCPS Board Will Fight Back Against State Takeover in Appeal”
Headline: “Republic Lawmakers Say JCPS Takeover is an Unnecessary Power Grab”
Headline: “Metro Council Passes Bipartisan Resolution Voicing Opposition to State Takeover of JCPS”
Under the direction of Superintendent Polio, our schools have finally started to make progress in closing the achievement gap for our most vulnerable students, including our students of color and those students with special needs. A state takeover threatens that progress and shuts our community out of the decision-making process for our schools. But we can’t stop it without growing our coalition. Sign up to help spread the word.
