From the Stumbo campaign: ATTORNEY GENERAL CANDIDATE GREG STUMBO HOPES THAT THE SPECIAL SESSION IS WORTH THE TAXPAYER’S TIME – AND MONEY
LEXINGTON, KY, July 15, 2019— The long-anticipated special session announcement today highlights problems with the state’s pension system that Attorney General candidate Greg Stumbo hopes will be addressed in a responsible and bipartisan manner. Noting that Governor Bevin and some of the House and Senate leadership have been combative towards alternative plans from House Democrats for the pension crisis, Mr. Stumbo states he “hopes that the Governor and the legislature will come together to solve this issue plaguing universities and quasi-government organizations that provide vital services to the Commonwealth. These groups and organizations are integral, as are the people who work in them. I hope that people’s livelihoods and their pensions aren’t being held hostage for political gain and that this special session is not a political football but an actual attempt at improving the pension situation.”
Mr. Stumbo also noted that in 2013 he worked on a bipartisan solution to stabilize the state pensions in KERS and KRS – solutions that many believe would have solved the pension problems had they been given ample time to take effect. “I hope that this special session addresses some of the issues caused by politically expedient choices that have been made the past year and a half and that the taxpayers of Kentucky don’t pay more for less,” Mr. Stumbo says. “Further, I have reviewed both plans and after spending the better part of a decade reviewing and working on the pension system, I can assure that the House Democrats’ plan for the pension system is a better solution that the Governor’s. If the plan from the House Democrats isn’t also considered in depth by the legislature, then this special session is a waste of time and money.”
