Washington Post: ‘You cannot fan the flames and condemn the fire’: Kentucky governor blames GOP for protest with hanging effigy
By KATIE SHEPHERD
As Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” blared from speakers, protesters supporting the Second Amendment and opposing coronavirus restrictions strung a stuffed effigy of Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) from a tree outside the governor’s mansion on Sunday.
Republicans and Democrats alike quickly denounced the scene, with Beshear calling it a “celebration of assassination on our capitol grounds.”
But on Tuesday, Beshear also laid some blame for the violent imagery on Republican legislators in his state, whom he accused of contributing to the increasingly tense atmosphere at protests of restrictions.
