KDP: Kentucky Congressman Sends Late Night Homophobic Rage Text to Local Reporter

Frankfort, Ky. -- On Tuesday, the Kentucky Democratic Party called on the Republican Party of Kentucky, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Republican Leaders in Kentucky to immediately denounce Congressman James Comer (R- KY) for using a homophobic slur in an angry late night text message to a local reporter.

Monday evening, Joe Sonka of the Louisville Courier-Journal reported that Congressman Comer, who has a history of bizarre texting behavior, became angry over a tweet and texted a demand for the tweet to be removed.

According to Sonka, the congressman then inexplicably appeared to insult a fellow Republican, former Republican Party of Kentucky Communications DIrector and consultant Tres Watson, by calling him “Gay Watson.” 

“Rep. Comer has embarrassed himself and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He has demeaned and insulted the LGBTQ community. His behavior must be condemned,” said Marisa McNee, spokeswoman for the Kentucky Democratic Party.

“This is not the first time a Kentucky Republican has drawn fire for homophobia and bigotry. Republican leaders in Kentucky have been quiet for far too long. The Republican Party of Kentucky, and its Republican leaders in the state, need to purge the hate and bigotry that plagues their party,” concluded McNee.
