AFL-CIO Daily Brief Jan. 3: A message from President Liz Shuler

- As we kick off 2025, there is no better source of inspiration than looking back at the extraordinary things workers accomplished this past year.
- I am struck by how stories of workers standing together and holding corporations accountable dominated headlines. Organizing stayed on the rise as the National Labor Relations Board reported that union election petitions were up 27% from fiscal year 2023. In a critical election year, 26,000 union volunteers across the country reached more than 10 million voters, and made the difference for pro-worker candidates. And all over the country, brave workers took to the streets and went on strikes that secured life-changing new contracts.
- I am confident 2025 will be filled with even more winning union elections, groundbreaking contracts and inspiring acts of solidarity that showcase why our movement has the power to be truly transformative.
- While 2025 will certainly bring challenges for working people and our freedom to organize, we are no strangers to hard fights. Union members don’t back down from contentious negotiations or longshot odds—those are the conditions some of our most memorable victories have been forged in. Regardless of what the next four years have in store for us, the labor movement will be on the front lines, fighting for the dignity and respect of all people, just like we’ve always done.
