LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Over the weekend, Rand Paul went to social media to call for the repeal of the Espionage Act, a law established to protect our national security by preventing the sale or distribution of sensitive U.S. intelligence to foreign adversaries. This came three days after the FBI executed a search warrant of former President Trump’s estate to retrieve highly classified White House documents, including sensitive nuclear records and the identities of U.S. intelligence agents.
Democratic Nominee for U.S. Senate and former State Representative Charles Booker, is demanding that his opponent end his assault on our democracy or immediately resign.
“Make no mistake about Rand Paul’s newfound position on the Espionage Act: Rand Paul is for Rand Paul,” Booker said. “Rand Paul famously used the Espionage Act to bully political opponents. Now he is working to cover-up espionage for the same reason – it serves his interests. As a U.S. Senator, Rand Paul has demonstrated a pattern of self-serving conduct punctuated by a treasonous and disqualifying track record of working against our democracy. From inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, to spreading dangerous propaganda following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Rand Paul has consistently shown us that he is willing to sell out our country for personal gain.”
“Rand Paul doesn’t care about earnest protections of the first amendment. He doesn’t even care about Donald Trump. If and when it serves him, he will throw him under the bus, too. This latest move is a dangerous and dishonest attempt to sow discord and threaten the legitimacy of our government.”
Paul’s statement comes just days after he appeared on Fox News to make a completely unfounded claim that the FBI planted evidence while executing the Mar-a-Lago search. Baseless rhetoric like Paul’s is dangerous and has worsened an already unprecedented threat to our national security by undermining the credibility of federal officials. This rhetoric has lead to an increase in reports of threats towards federal employees, officials, and government buildings all over the country.
“Rand Paul should urgently retract his statement and put an end to his self-serving agenda that is threatening our democracy. If he won’t protect the safety and security of the country he swore an oath to dutifully serve, he should pack up his office right now.”
