The Kentucky State AFL-CIO and the American Federation of Government Employees will again observe Augusta Y. Thomas Day on Thursday.

Thomas, a veteran labor and civil rights leader from Louisville, capped her union career as AFGE’s National Vice President for Women and Fair Practices from 2009-2018.

Also a longtime member of the state AFL-CIO Executive board, she died on Oct. 10, 2018, at age 86.

Both the state AFL-CIO and AFGE annually mark Oct. 14 as Augusta Y. Thomas Day.

Delegates to the 2019 state AFL-CIO convention in Lexington unanimously approved an "Augusta Y. Thomas Day" resolution honoring her commitment "to the labor and civil rights movements for more than 40 years."

The resolution also praised her as "a leader that inspires us all to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves."
