Louisville Courier-Journal: Kentucky state Sen. Morgan McGarvey wins Democratic primary for Rep. John Yarmuth's seat

Kentucky Democratic Party Chair Colmon Elridge has released statements congratulating former state Rep. Charles Booker and state Senate Minority Leader Morgan McGarvey on their Democratic primary victories Tuesday. Both are from Louisville and both were unanimously endorsed by the Kentucky State AFL-CIO.

Booker will take on Sen. Rand Paul, a Bowling Green Republican, on Nov. 8. McGarvey will battle Republicans Stuart Ray or Rhonda Palazzo for the Third District seat which opened when longtime Rep. John Yarmuth announced he was retiring. Ray and Palazzo were neck-and-neck in the vote count Wednesday morning.

Booker:

“With Charles Booker’s victory tonight, Kentucky Democrats have made history by nominating the first Black candidate to lead a major party ticket heading into a general election in Kentucky. Representation matters and generations of future leaders will be inspired by seeing this moment. Rep. Booker has built a movement across Kentucky, uniting and energizing grassroots Democrats ‘from the hood to the holler’ behind his vision for investing in Kentucky’s working families – from affordable health care to good-paying jobs. And the contrast couldn’t be clearer: Rand Paul has failed Kentuckians over and over again, pretending to be an outsider while playing the same cynical Washington games he preaches against. Rand Paul works for powerful special interests. Charles Booker works for Kentucky families.”

McGarvey:

“With the retirement of Rep. John Yarmuth, who has served with excellence and integrity for the past 15 years, we’re confident that Morgan McGarvey will not only keep the 3rd Congressional District blue, but will also follow in Congressman Yarmuth’s footsteps by delivering real results for Kentucky families. We also thank Rep. Attica Scott for not only the honorable campaign she ran, but for her years of service in the Kentucky House of Representatives. We congratulate Sen. McGarvey for his victory tonight, as well as all of our Democratic congressional nominees across Kentucky who will hold Republican incumbents in Congress accountable for their failed records.”

Elridge also commented on the results of Kentucky’s other Democratic primaries:

“We’re proud of our Democratic nominees up and down the ballot this year. While Kentucky Republicans descend further and further into chaos, extremism, cruelty and infighting, Kentucky Democrats are standing together to present a clear alternative. Across the commonwealth, Democratic candidates for federal, state and local office are fighting to make life easier for Kentucky families by lowering costs, making health care more accessible and affordable and continuing the unprecedented economic boom we’ve seen under Gov. Andy Beshear’s leadership."
