From the KDP: Bevin’s Harmful Health Care Agenda Would Make Opioid Crisis Worse

Frankfort, KY—Matt Bevin is trying to claim he’s fighting the opioid crisis today, but his harmful health care agenda would only make the problem worse. 

Governor Bevin is trying to tear down expanded Medicaid even though it keeps rural health care clinics open and “increases access to treatments for opioid use disorder.” 

Bevin is also currently involved in a lawsuit that would allow insurance companies to deny coverage to people seeking treatment for mental health and substance use disorder services. 

Meanwhile, Bevin has opposed Attorney General Beshear’s fight against the big drug companies that helped create the drug epidemic, while touting a plan to hide painted rocks as a solution. 

Kentucky Democratic Party Spokesperson Marisa McNee said, “Matt Bevin can’t take credit for fighting the opioid crisis, while also trying to gut the vital health care that people on the front lines of this drug epidemic rely on. If Bevin gets his way, rural health care clinics will shut their doors and insurance companies could deny treatment to people suffering from substance use disorders. That’s unacceptable and we need a new governor if we’re going to hold the big drug companies accountable and get ahead of this terrible crisis.”
