Matt Bevin is telling Kentuckians it’s “none of their business” why he’s using their taxpayer-funded state plane to fly around the country, telling the Bowling Green Daily News:
“The real question is: Why does it matter what the purpose (of the trip) is? Did taxpayers pay for it? If they did, then they should know the purpose. If they didn’t pay for it, it’s none of their business.”
Bevin also admitted to the Bowling Green Daily News: “I have used the plane for personal reasons and used it to speak to different organizations.”
The report also noted that, “The governor said he has either paid for the trips himself or had outside organizations pick up the tab...”
“Matt Bevin needs to stop insulting Kentucky taxpayers by saying it’s ‘none of their business’ and come clean on why he’s using a taxpayer-funded state plane to criss-cross the country for personal reasons. He should also disclose what outside organizations and donors are buying access by funding these trips,” said Marisa McNee, spokesperson for the Kentucky Democratic Party. “Bevin’s refusal to do so is jaw-droppingly arrogant. We’re calling for the governor to immediately explain who is on these trips, why he’s taking them, and who he was meeting with. Kentucky taxpayers paid for that airplane and they deserve answers.”
This comes after a Louisville Courier-Journal report exposed the governor’s refusal to disclose reasons for his taxpayer-funded trips outside of Kentucky on a state plane at least nine different times, including trips to Miami, Atlanta, Alabama, Nashville, Kansas City, Chicago, and Wisconsin, among others.
While Bevin “declined to comment” on the purpose of his out-of-state trips, the Courier-Journal has already reported that one of Bevin’s flights on the state plane to West Virginia was “presumably to attend a fundraiser.”
