KDP: ICYMI: Kentuckians Favor Gov. Beshear’s Plan for Budget Over Republican Plan for Rainy Day Fund

Frankfort, Ky. -- Now that Republicans are about to unveil their budget proposal at the very end of the legislative session, here’s a reminder that Kentuckians find their ideas to boost the rainy day fund in the middle of a pandemic to be a bad idea. Instead, they favor Governor Andy Beshear’s original plan to invest in broadband and send direct payments to Kentuckians and small businesses according to a recent survey.

The poll, conducted December 14- 17, 2020 by Garin-Hart-Yang research (see polling memo No.4) , shows fully three-quarters of voters prefer that state government use the one-time surplus to create jobs and provide direct relief. When presented with a list of priorities, they place Governor Beshear’s plans of direct relief, repairing schools and investing in broadband over the GOP plan of putting the money into a rainy day fund. 

In a statement, Kentucky Democratic Party spokesperson Marisa McNee encouraged Republicans to listen to their actual constituents, not the special interest donors they usually defer to.

“Kentuckians want and need their legislators to give them relief. If a once every 100 years worldwide pandemic isn't considered a rainy day, then I don’t know what would qualify. We need to invest in our people now, not later. It’s time for the Republicans to stop playing games and support Gov. Beshear’s very popular budget plan that will help Kentuckians immediately.”
