Frankfort, KY After years of misdirection and tepid support, every Republican candidate in Kentucky is now officially in favor defunding public schools through charter schools.

In a late Sunday move, the Republican National Committee declared they would not be releasing a 2020 platform this week and instead would support whatever President Trump says. Moments later, the Trump campaign released their re-election platform. The only plank under education is to defund public schools through charter schools.

Following the logic of the Republican Party of Kentucky, that means every single candidate running as a Republican supports defunding public schools in favor of charter schools.

The lack of support for public schools comes as school districts across the state have adapted to the struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic, including moving to virtual learning to keep families safe, spending on laptops and mobile hotspots and providing hot meals daily to families in need.

In a statement, Kentucky Democratic Party spokesperson Marisa McNee said Kentucky Republicans have finally shown their true colors when it comes to supporting public education and our educators.

“This is clear and simple: If you support public education and our teachers, the Republican Party does not support you,”  McNee said.
