Frankfort, KY — The Kentucky Democratic Party is calling on Matt Bevin to withdraw from a legal effort he recently joined that threatens to undermine health care protections for Kentuckians with pre-existing medical conditions.

As Spectrum News 1 reported, Bevin is taking legal action to offer cover for  “insurance plans that a judge determined a ‘run around’ to the Affordable Care Act.” In particular, Bevin is trying to make it possible for insurance companies to once again skirt the ACA’s Essential Health Benefits requirements that ensure people with many basic pre-existing conditions get the care they need, including prescription drug coverage, maternity care, and mental health services.

Kentucky Democratic Party Spokesperson Marisa McNee stated: “Make no mistake: Matt Bevin is trying to bring Kentucky back to the days when insurance companies could deny people with pre-existing health conditions the care and coverage they need. That’s unacceptable. We need to be fighting for more access to affordable health care — and the governor should withdraw from this plan to take us backward immediately.”
