KDP: McConnell Attends Ritzy Wedding While Stalling Additional Pandemic Relief
McConnell’s office confirmed he attended the wedding of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron. According to Kentucky legal reporter Shannon Ragland, the wedding occurred at White Hall, a 1855 “mansion and gardens” that according to its website rents for at least $2,500 for a weekend wedding, not including additional costs like catering, tents, etc.
It’s the second time during the COVID-19 pandemic Mitch McConnell has wined and dined with donors and political allies instead of doing his job as leader of the U.S. Senate.
Back in March, McConnell returned to Louisville in the middle of negotiations regarding a relief package to celebrate with donors and allies about placing Justin Walker on the federal bench. McConnell now cheerleads that bill, despite abandoning negotiations on it.
As McConnell celebrated over the weekend, hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians -- and millions of Americans -- were worried about paying their mortgages and rent.
Meanwhile, more than 200,000 Kentuckians are currently unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 48 percent of Kentucky renters are at-risk of eviction, and Kentucky’s business community is warning about massive tax increases while begging McConnell for a forgivable unemployment insurance loan.
In a statement, Kentucky Democratic Party spokesperson Marisa McNee said that if Mitch McConnell wants to spend his weekends at ritzy weddings while the people he serves suffer, he doesn’t deserve to return to Washington D.C.
“Once again, Mitch has abandoned Kentucky in a time of need. While Kentuckians worry about paying rent and putting food on the table, Mitch McConnell left DC to attend a secret wedding at a manson in the middle of a pandemic,” McNee said. “Kentucky deserves a real leader like Amy McGrath who will fight for them every day -- not just when it’s convenient.”
