If Trump comes into power once again, his disdain toward military service members alone foretells a leadership of self-interest rather than national service.

Every Marine recruit during his or her bootcamp training learns about Marine Corps history and tradition. In graced periods between ongoing bombardment of physical and mental duress of the bootcamp regimen, Marine recruits hear of the battles fought valiantly by Marines who came before them. There were many. Names that fostered images of foreign and exotic places marked by blood, myth, and valor—Iwo Jima, Peleliu, Guadalcanal, Chosin, Okinawa, to name but a few. New ones I’m sure have emerged for those now passing through the recruit training grounds of San Diego and Parris Island—Hue City, Khe Sanh and, more recently, Fallujah.
