Louisville Courier-Journal: Education group KY 120 United to start American Federation of Teachers union chapter

FRANKFORT — Three years ago, Kentucky lawmakers quietly gutted a wastewater bill, replaced its contents with pension reform and zipped it through both chambers in a day.

That night, around 200 teachers gathered in the Capitol to protest what became known as the "sewer bill." The next day, more than 500 showed up to protest, shutting down more than 20 school districts with "sickouts." 

In the days that followed, a fledgling group of teachers and school employees that organized the protests — now called KY 120 United — faced a choice, leader Jeni Bolander said: Were they going to be a "moment or a movement?"
