Louisville Courier-Journal: McConnell makes same argument as arch segregationist in letter opposing voting rights bill

Sen. Mitch McConnell's signature is on the letter to a constituent, but it reads like a message from the late Mississippi Sen. James O. Eastland, an arch segregationist and fierce opponent of federal civil rights legislation.

The Kentucky voter wrote McConnell in part urging him to support HR 1, the For the People Act of 2021. Passed by the Democratic-majority House, the bill would expand voting, which Republicans want to restrict at the state level. The numerous new GOP voter laws make casting ballots especially difficult for “racial minorities, poor people, and young and old voters," according to the nonpartisan Brennan Center for Justice.
