KDP Statement on Anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s Death

The following is a statement from Colmon Elridge, chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party:

"Breonna Taylor should be alive today. She should be here making a mark on our Commonwealth as the beautiful person she was, not as a memory upon which a movement and this moment of reckoning exists. We must honor her life by banning no knock warrants and make sure what happened to Breonna Taylor never happens again to another Kentuckian. We grieve and mourn with her mother and family and we will never stop saying her name."

Saturday marks one year since Louisville police shot and killed Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, during a botched drug raid at her South End home.

In the 365 days since, Taylor's name has become a rallying cry against police violence and systemic racism, with outrage over her death leading to widespread reforms locally and calls to end no-knock search warrants nationally.

To commemorate Taylor, her family and connected activists have planned several events that will take place through the weekend.

The Courier Journal will go live on Facebook during a rally Saturday and a panel Sunday, both organized by New York-based social justice group Until Freedom.
