McGarvey: 'I’m going to go to Washington to stand up for working people'
By MORGAN McGARVEY
EDITOR'S NOTE: The Kentucky State AFL-CIO unanimously endorsed McGarvey for Congress.
Election day is Tuesday, and I could not be more proud to have the endorsement of the hard-working men and women of the Kentucky State AFL-CIO and the support of organized labor in my campaign to succeed John Yarmuth and represent Louisville in Congress.
Ten years ago, when I ran for the state senate, I set out to knock on voters’ doors saying I would go to Frankfort to stand up for working people and to work to get big things done to help Kentuckians. I’ve served in the super minority every single day that I have held public office. I was elected Minority Leader when a guy named Matt Bevin was our sitting governor. It is in standing up to Republican attacks on working people that I have found myself standing shoulder to shoulder with the men and women of organized labor.
Every year, we fought their attempts to pass Right To Work. We fought their attempts to repeal prevailing wage requirements for state contractors. And we fought against the sewer bill to protect the hard-earned retirement benefits of our teachers and public employees.
After serving Louisville for a decade in the General Assembly, I am running for Congress to take action at the federal level. It’s a bigger campaign than the one I launched from my kitchen table ten years ago – but the goal is the same. I’m going to go to Washington to stand up for working people, and to get big things done that help Kentuckians.
In Congress, I’ll continue to stand up for Louisville’s workers, by working to expand access to health care, improve public education and support our teachers and public education employees, protect the right for workers to organize, and bring to Louisville and to Kentucky the good-paying, union jobs that make our economy run.
I’m proud to say that this campaign has been endorsed by 30 local unions and labor organizations, including the Kentucky State AFL-CIO and the Kentucky State Building and Construction Trades Council. I thank you for your support, and I’m excited to get to work for you in Washington.
