McGrath holds McConnell accountable for abandoning Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Tonight, retired Marine Lt. Col. Amy McGrath did what few have been able to do during Sen. Mitch McConnell’s 36-year career in the U.S. Senate: make him answer for his failed leadership.

Notorious for skirting the issues, McConnell fumbled during the Gray TV U.S. Senate debate, while McGrath laid out a clear path forward for Kentucky’s future.

“Mitch ran an ad 30 years ago saying he would fix health care,” McGrath said. “Now he is trying to take it away and saying he needs six more years to fix it. That’s like my 8-year-old saying ‘Mom, I will take out the trash, I just need six years to do it.’”

Throughout the race, McGrath has laid out several plans to help Kentucky overcome 36 years of being abandoned by McConnell, including a way to make health care more affordable and accessible.

In attempting to defend his record, McConnell bragged about how he helps Kentucky punch above its weight. McGrath called out his lie: “Sen. McConnell likes to talk about Kentucky punching above its weight. We feel like we have been sucker punched. We have the highest cancer rates in the country, one of the highest rates of diabetes. Our economy has not been this bad since the Great Depression. It is just unbelievable.”

McConnell made excuses throughout the night for why a second round of relief has not been delivered to Kentucky. McGrath gave a failing grade to the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic in Kentucky and nationwide.

“We have 213,000 Americans dead in nine months,” said McGrath. “That is more Americans dead than World War I, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, [and the] Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined. Senator McConnell thinks we have done a good job. We have 5% of the world's population, 25% of the COVID cases.”

Throughout the night, while McConnell played politics, McGrath kept the focus on Kentuckians.

“This race isn’t about Mitch McConnell, it isn’t about Amy McGrath - it’s about Kentucky. Kentucky deserves a senator who represents everyone.”

McGrath looks forward to debating McConnell again at the KET Kentucky Tonight Forum on Oct. 26.
