From Mike Broihier: Next Tuesday is crucial for Kentucky

EDITOR'S NOTE: Mike Broihier wants to take on Mitch McConnell next year. But Broihier has his priorities straight this year. We are glad to see he is supporting all of our endorsed candidates in Tuesday's election. We appreciate the sentiment in the following email from the Democratic senate candidate:

Years ago, I was recruiting for the Marine Corps and worked with a Gunnery Sergeant who was a huge fan of motivational speaker Zig Ziglar. He got our team tickets to see the legendary sales trainer because recruiting is sales with a very difficult product to sell.

The only line I remember from that night was Ziglar saying, “Hire nice people.” It made me chuckle at the time; I was looking for tough men and women to enter the profession of arms not to lead scout troops, but I quickly realized how wrong I was.

Ziglar’s “nice people” weren’t weak, or fearful or ineffective. Nice people are fair but firm, optimistic but not foolhardy, but most of all predictable in their mood and performance.

I’ve met the entire Democratic slate of candidates for our 5 November election and they are nice. Really nice. Not the cloying, patronizing niceness you associate with politicians, but the kind of people who you’d like to have as neighbors or teaching your children. When elected they will lead the commonwealth in a compassionate, honest and competent direction.

They are all also incredibly smart and highly qualified, which I can’t say of their opponents. From Andy Beshear and Jacqueline Coleman at the top of the ticket through the entire down ballot, they outmatch and outclass those running against them.

Kentucky deserves a real farmer like Robert Haley Conway in charge of agriculture. And, an experienced auditor like Sheri Donohue in charge of the books. And, a banker like Michael Bowman in charge of the treasury. And, a Secretary of State like Heather French Henry who wants every Kentuckian to vote and have their vote counted. And, an Attorney General like Greg Stumbo who has actually tried a case.

The bottom line is this. We have an opportunity on November 5th to change not only the direction of government in Kentucky, but the tone. To turn state governance toward fairness, respect, inclusiveness and competence, we must all do everything to turnout the vote next on Tuesday.

Vote. And bring your neighbors, friends and relatives to vote. Let your voice be heard.

Thanks,
Mike
