Amy McGrath: Leaders don't leave in times of crisis.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - While Sen. Mitch McConnell sent the Senate home for a 25-day recess instead of working to provide much-needed aid to Kentuckians, Retired Marine Lt. Col. Amy McGrath released her new plan for the commonwealth, Mission: Rebuilding Kentucky. The legislative platform addresses the immediate economic pain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and lays out how to rebuild Kentucky’s economic, infrastructure, health care and education systems to be stronger, more resilient and more equitable.

“We have to get our country on a path toward recovery, and we have to do it now,” said McGrath, who is running for U.S. Senate. “But this is a turning point in our country’s history, and it is not enough to just recover from this crisis. We have to re-emerge from this stronger—with a health care system that works for everyone, a robust economy and a government that serves the people again.”

While McGrath is flying herself across the state talking to Kentuckians who are struggling during the pandemic, McConnell adjourned the Senate without passing any additional legislation to address the health or economic crisis.

“Leaders don’t leave,” McGrath said. “Mitch has demonstrated time and again that he’ll work overtime to do backroom deals and give tax breaks to big corporations, but when Kentucky needs help, he goes AWOL. He’s left Kentucky workers and families to fend for themselves.”

In contrast to McConnell’s months-long inaction, McGrath’s plan includes immediate solutions to get every Kentuckian health care coverage, keep state and local governments running and keep unemployed families afloat. It also includes long-term policies to create jobs while rebuilding our infrastructure, revamp our trade deals so they benefit American workers again, alleviate our high-poverty rate, work toward closing the opportunity gap, make college affordable again and combat corruption in Washington.

Her innovative solutions include implementing a subsidized public option with no deductibles for the duration of the pandemic; building a 21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps; providing high-quality pre-K to every child; creating a national service plan to provide the opportunity for a debt-free higher education; and making significant federal investments to ensure that high speed broadband is available in every community.

McGrath is launching her Mission: Rebuilding Kentucky tour in Boone and Kenton counties today and in Muhlenberg County on Friday. She will be in Perry, Jefferson and Fayette counties throughout next week.
