EDITOR'S NOTE: While we wish Bill well in retirement, we hope he will continue to chip in news and commentary to the website.

I would like to thank the members of Kentucky’s Building Trades. I am retiring this Friday, September 3rd.

I have been State Director for the last 8 ½ years which have been the most trying times Kentucky workers have experienced. Pro-worker laws and protections put in place back to the 1930’s have been rolled back in the last 5 years.

Right-To-Work, Prevailing Wage repeal, cuts or attempts to cut Workers Comp, Unemployment, Apprenticeships and  safety have affected the union and non-union segments of the construction industry. After years of legislative attacks it’s no wonder many workers chose a different career path. Now, there are huge shortages in the industry as a result.

The tide may be turning with improved wages, signing and retention bonuses being offered. Suddenly, there is a newfound respect for essential workers and the skilled trades.

With the infrastructures bills passed and in Congress, there are unprecedented amounts of investments in infrastructure on the horizon. Job security for construction workers may be as bright as it’s been in decades.

Chad Mills, a member of Pipefitters Local 633 in Owensboro is taking over as State Director. Chad was Business Manager for the last 9 years and has been working with me since last month through a transition.  The Building Trades office will move as well:
