St. Louis union halts strike after Boeing’s modified contract offer

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) stated they will halt the strike on Monday, Aug. 1, as a result, of a modified contract offer from Boeing. IAM District 837 members voted on July 24 to strike at three Boeing locations St. Louis, St. Charles, and Mascoutah, Illinois. Aug. 1. According to the spokesperson from IAM, they will vote to decide to accept Boeing’s modified offer on Aug. 3. The current contract IAM has with Boeing is extended until after the vote on Wednesday, Aug. 3. The contract is expected to expire on Aug. 4 after midnight.

Boeing may narrowly avoid a strike at its three St. Louis-area facilities after it made a new contract proposal to the union. Local Boeing workers had voted to reject the company’s previous offer and initiate a strike, which was scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. Monday. Instead, workers will vote Wednesday on a new offer the company reached after an overnight bargaining session, according to the union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 837.
Bridgestone strike avoided after deal with local steelworkers union reached

Members of the local steelworkers union will be going to work at Bridgestone Friday morning after reaching an agreement just before midnight. The members of United Steelworkers Post 310 had their contract with Bridgestone run out at 11:00 Thursday night. They had been negotiating for months with the company. Workers say they were prepared to strike, but 36 minutes after the contract ran out a deal was reached. “When they reach a tentative agreement, they get all the details they bring it back to the membership, then we have informational meetings. Several of them so everybody has the opportunity to, to look at everything there. Ask any questions to the bargaining team on the details of that. And then after that, we do a vote of the membership,” said Bill Campbell, Vice President of Local 310.
Union preparing to go into mediation with Boeing to try to avoid a strike

The union representing nearly 2,500 workers at Boeing Co. plants in the St. Louis area said Friday it was preparing to go into mediation with the aerospace company to try to avoid a strike. “The company was putting stuff on the shop floor that they had reached out to the union and we had not reached back,” which was untrue, said Jody Bennett, chief of staff of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
No strike: Steelworkers reach tentative agreement with Goodyear

Steelworkers at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, including workers at the plant in Fayetteville, will not be going on strike after reaching a tentative agreement with the company, union representatives announced Saturday. The tentative agreement will go back to union membership for ratification, Rodney Thompson, vice president of United Steel Workers Local 959, said Saturday about an 5 p.m. "If 50% of the membership votes yes, it will be ratified," he said. According to Thompson, the 6 p.m. deadline for an agreement no longer applies, allowing work to continue at the plant while union members prepare to vote on the ratification of the agreement.
