NLRB GC Says ExxonMobil's 10-Month Lockout Was Illegal

National Labor Relations Board prosecutors in the agency's Fort Worth, Texas, office have alleged that ExxonMobil unlawfully locked out more than 650 United Steelworkers members at one of the oil giant's refineries, according to an announcement from the union. The USW said Tuesday that NLRB attorneys lodged a complaint against ExxonMobil based on the union's charges over a 10-month lockout of workers at the company's Beaumont, Texas, refinery. The workers, who are members of USW Local 13-243, were locked out starting in May 2021 until they were permitted to return to work in March, according to the union.

 Wednesday afternoon, members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) announced plans to move their picket line from eastern Iowa, to outside Westchester' Ingredion Headquarters in Illinois. After more than two months of rising tensions and stalled contract negotiations, BCTGM workers for Ingredion in Cedar Rapids now plan to picket outside the company’s global headquarters in Chicago.

 

Some Pittsburgh Post-Gazette workers set to go on strike at midnight

A strike involving union workers at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was scheduled to begin at midnight, according to a statement released Wednesday night. Mailers and typographers will walk off the job in response to "unfair labor practices by the management of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, including unilateral changes to their health care plan," said the statement from the Communications Workers of America.

 

More than 600 nurses in Wichita could form a union

Nurses at St. Francis hospital in Wichita have filed for a union election. If successful in their union drive, about 625 nurses will form a new bargaining unit with the National Nurses United (NNU). The NNU is the largest nurses union in the country, with more than 175,000 members. Overall, about 20% of registered nurses in the U.S. are union members. The Kansas State Nurses Association says there are more than 50,000 registered nurses in the state. St. Francis is one of the biggest hospitals in the state and is a part of the Ascension Via Christi network.

Dave Clark, Director of Membership Development with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW, and a former electrical worker, provided information and the tour for the AERO Pathway juniors. Clark is also AERO Advisory Board Vice-Chairman and provides a pre-apprenticeship opportunities to AERO seniors each year where they develop skills specific to those needed to enter into the Apprenticeship Program with IBEW once they graduate high school. “I wished I had something like this Pathway when I was in high school. It’s exactly what I was missing,” Clark said. “I’m happy to help make connections for students to join this exciting field.”
