National AFL-CIO chief: Kotek has a 'proven track record'

The first woman to lead the nation's largest labor federation, a former Oregonian herself, came to Portland to show organized labor's support for Democrat Tina Kotek's candidacy for governor. AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler says Kotek has demonstrated her support for paid sick leave (2015), a higher state minimum wage (2016) and paid family and medical leave (2019), plus other issues of concern to working families during her 15 years in the Oregon Legislature, a record nine of them as speaker of the House.

We are a labor-to-labor program, talking to the labor members and household members around the state: getting the word out about our endorsed candidates, why we endorse them–their pro-worker, pro-union policies. We’re doing it using our typical pillars; we have a robust phone program; a large door-knocking program; we have SMS texting going; we did a full handwritten postcard program; we have Local Union Mail and digital social media outreach. We are using every channel we can to get word out to our members and make sure they turn out and help us elect pro worker candidates here in Wisconsin.

Democrat Senate candidate Tim Ryan embarked on a tour of Ohio and make a stop in his hometown of Niles to talk with Valley Locals. Attendees greeted Ryan with cheers of his slogan, “Workers First” as he arrived.

Faculty Rally In Middlesex College As They Await Contract Negotiations

The Middlesex College American Federation of Teachers held a rally on Thursday as contract negotiations with the administration stalled. The full-time faculty's contract expired on July 1, 2020. 

The rally was held at the Edison campus. New Jersey State AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech joined the faculty in the rally.

 

National Nurses United adds 42k as New York State Nurses join

National Nurses United added 42,000 new members on October 20, as the independent New York State Nurses Association joined it, both unions said. The unity, approved by NYSNA convention delegates, increases NNU to more than 220,000 RNs nationwide, cementing its status as the largest union for registered nurses in the U.S.

 

Utica Zoo Workers Vote To Unionize

Workers at the Utica Zoo voted Thursday to unionize. They will join the Civil Service Employees Association following the National Labor Relations Board election. Zoo workers include zookeepers, veterinary technicians, education and ambassador animal specialists, buildings and groundskeepers, administrative specialists, and gift-shop employees. Zoo officials said they will work with the new union. As one of New York’s largest unions, the CSEA represents nearly 300,000 workers at counties, towns, villages, school districts, library systems, authorities, and public corporations. It is one of the largest affiliates of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees which, in turn, is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.

 

Healthcare workers at Windham Hospital to strike over union negotiations

Windham Hospital healthcare workers announced on Sunday that they intend to strike for two days starting Monday morning over union negotiations. There are nearly 250 members in Local 5099. It includes technical and support staff such as X-ray technicians, kitchen staff, and cardiologists. Heather Howlett is the president and says insurance is the main reason they will strike.
