Tens of thousands of academic workers across the University of California system voted to authorize a potential strike, threatening to throw a wrench in the operations of 10 major universities across the state and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The United Auto Workers (UAW), which represents some 48,000 postdocs, teacher’s assistants, academic student employees and student researchers across four bargaining units, called for a strike vote last month alleging unfair labor practices.

At this year’s Tradeswomen Build Nations conference, organized by the North American Building Trades Unions (NABTU), more than 3,000 women in the building and construction trades gathered in Las Vegas to discuss how to empower each other and address the unique issues they face.

Food service workers at Johns Hopkins University are raising their voices after a fallout over contract negotiations between their union and the school. The food service workers protested Thursday afternoon, joined with Johns Hopkins students. Protesters said they are concerned about job security and standards. "We are out here today because in the university's proposal, there is zero job security for these workers," a protester said. "We want all food service workers on campus to have decent jobs."

University of California student workers voted overwhelmingly to authorize going on strike. The announcement came late Wednesday night. The action covers about 48,000 workers that include researchers, post-docs, teaching assistants and graders. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the employees voted to strike over pay and what they call the UC’s unfair labor tactics. They could walk off their jobs as early as Nov. 14.

U.S. labor board moves to nix Trump-era union election rule

Major unions including the AFL-CIO and North America’s Building Trades Unions had filed petitions urging the NLRB to rescind the rule eliminating blocking charges. The AFL-CIO also filed a lawsuit in 2020 claiming the rule conflicted with federal labor law and the NLRB had failed to follow the proper administrative procedures in adopting it. The case in Washington, D.C., federal court has been stayed pending new rules from the board.
