What’s on the Horizon for Working Women?
Ms. Magazine
By Liz Shuler
June 13, 2023
One year ago this week, I was officially elected as the first woman to lead the AFL-CIO, America’s largest labor federation—consisting of 12.5 million workers across 60 unions. It’s been the honor of a lifetime to be part of the changing labor movement that is increasingly led by women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants and others who have gone underrepresented for too long. But the truth is, the real leaders are the women and workers on the ground who are leading organizing drives and picket lines across America, such as nurses in New York, teachers in Minnesota, retail workers at REI, warehouse workers at Amazon, or baristas at Starbucks. The past 12 months have been nothing short of historic in how these workers and many more have risen up and seized our collective power (with the Federation marching and fighting alongside them).

Members of the International Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 70 rallied Tuesday as they’re in negotiations with Spirit AeroSystems over their next contract. The current contract expires on June 23. Ahead of that, contact negotiations between Spirt and the local machinists union have been going on for weeks. One of the union’s biggest concerns is the removal of core and enhanced insurance options, followed by outsourcing and language dealing with the overtime policy. The biggest chant heard from the nearly 100 union members gathered for a rally outside Spirit’s administrative building was, “No core out the door.”

Feneis says there needs to be a discussion on how to ensure companies comply with state codes. That’s also a question Ashley Hawkins with the Charlotte Metrolina Labor Council is asking.“They deserve the respect of their codes being followed in our city; for not only the civilians who are working on these job sites but for the firefighters who might have to run into those job sites and save lives,” Hawkins said.
