'When we fight, we win': VP congratulates Culinary Union but workers' fight isn't over

Hundreds of Culinary Union Local 226 workers gathered Wednesday to hear a congratulatory message from the United States Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris' visit to Las Vegas comes on the heels of a historic employment deal made between three resort corporations: Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts and Wynn Resorts in November.

On December 22, unionized employees at the Barnes & Noble flagship store in Manhattan's Union Square staged a walkout over concerns about management's alleged refusal to bargain in good faith with their recently formed union. The employees, represented by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), walked off the job just before 3pm and protested outside the storefront for two hours.

A threatened strike days before the Formula 1 Grand Prix race helped their cause. And that deal reverberates into 2024 as the culinary union continues negotiating with smaller casinos.
Ohio State Wexner Medical Center health care workers vote to unionize

Health care workers at Ohio State University's (OSU) Wexner Medical Center have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). According to a press release, the nearly 1,000 workers are composed of Patient Care Associates (PCA) and Psychiatric Care Technicians (PCT).
Culinary in negotiations with downtown, independent Strip casinos

Culinary Local 226 officials say they are still negotiating with 21 Las Vegas-area hotel-casinos for a new five-year contract for more than 7,000 workers. Hospitality workers at 21 downtown Las Vegas and independent Strip hotel-casinos, plus two more in Northern Nevada, are working without a contract, which expired on June 1, according to the union. There are roughly 7,700 members at those 23 properties. Officials say they could call a strike deadline this month or in February.
