EDITOR'S NOTE: Kentucky will take part in Wednesday's nationwide observance with a Workers First Caravan in Louisville. The procession will start at 3 p.m. at Teamsters Local 89 hall, 3813 Taylor Blvd. Vehicles will caravan uptown Mitch McConnell's office at 601 W. Broadway, Room 630, thus "reminding him that the commonwealth’s working families are watching, and asking him to take action," said Liles Taylor, Kentucky State AFL-CIO political coordinator. Additional caravans from across all 50 states and Puerto Rico will be participating in a powerful show of solidarity. Participants are urged to arrive at the Local 89 hall in plenty of time for the caravan to get organized. America faces crises on three critical fronts: a public health pandemic, an economic free fall and long-standing structural racism.

As America’s labor movement, we must urgently address all three with precision and purpose. They cannot be fixed separately. America’s Five Economic Essentials must be combined with policing reforms and implemented in ways that recognize the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black Americans.

This is why we are coming together nationwide as working people on June 17—to demand Congress pass the HEROES Act and address police reforms that are urgently needed.

Addressing racism is a labor issue because it is a workplace issue. It's a community issue, and unions are our communities. We must and will continue to fight to address issues of racial and economic inequality and win reforms in policing on June 17 and beyond.
